I want to interrupt my incessant prattling about Beltane to solicit some opinions. Have you noticed how prevalent is the notion that only centrists are reasoned and sane? How often do you hear someone say "I think both parties are nuts. The only reasonable position is the middle one."

I'm gonna call bullshit on that. I think it's intellectually lazy. What people really mean by this is that the only good opinion is one that has been carefully considered, and that's certainly true, but simply adopting a "moderate" or "middle of the road" position isn't the same thing. It's a cheat, and it's no substitute for actually thinking.

I'll also point out (and you knew this was coming) that I think this is a device used more often by the Right these days. "Fair and Balanced," right? The GOP is the voice of the infallible "center" and those crazies on the Left are insufficiently moderate. This is the single most boldly marketed message coming from the Right these days. The pronouncement of their supreme even-handedness.

I've seen a lot of ads on the Metro lately listing the most extreme circumstances under which abortions occur, and asking if abortion rights have "gone to far." That's just the most disingenuous load of crap. Those people aren't concerned that we've "gone to far". They are simply trying a slight of hand to distract the public from their extreme (yes, extreme) agenda in which no woman has the right to an abortion.

OK, I could go on, but I'm beginning to sort of ramble around the issue here.

Anyone wanna argue with me? I'm truly very interested in contradictory opinions (how moderate of me!) because I am still trying to solidify this concept in my mind. And hearing other peoples' thoughts is one way we liberals inform ourselves, ya see.

I was reading in the post today about animal rights activists that are harrassing and beating drug company executives of labs that experiment on animals. While frankly i think the execs prolly deserve it for price gouging if not for animal cruelty, the point is there are extremists on each side.

To me, the definition of an extremist is someone who won't rest until you agree with them. For example, I am not religious, but you (rachel) and most people on your f-list don't give a shit whether I am or not. But, an extremist christian would attack me on-line blathering about my soul and other rot. What scares the shit out of me is that these folks with this mentality are starting to think they rule the world.

BTW. those signs on abortion should be banned, hello separation of church and state?

Yeah, no kidding. The tag line I've seen a lot is "Women Deserve Better than Abortion". *snort*

Yeah, well, women deserve better than poverty, shitty health care and abandonment by their partners, but those things happen, and then you need to find solutions.

It just makes me see red. I think that abortion is one topic on which I shouldn't debate, because it's too hard for me to remain respectful of the other person's opinion.

No, the signs should be allowed. The signs about legalizing pot should be allowed as well - that's more under our current interpretation of first amendment freedom. They all have a right to pay for advertising space.

Yeah I know....but pissing me off on an early morning commuter train packed with jackasses is a pretty dangerous proposition.

There are indeed extremists on our side, but I find that they are genearlly less likely to be ugly thugs about it. Even the violent ones are usually people who have gotten themselves worked into a frenzy over the issue itself, rather than being predisposed to violence and hatred, then finding a philosophy that suits this predisposition, which is the case with most white supremicists.
