Women and guns

Also, it's astounding to me how hung up and prudish lots of people are. There's this MeFi thread about a site that chronicles images of women with guns. Neat! I mean, I like looking at women, and I particularly like images of especially tough, empowered women.

Guns = power, of a sort. I don't particularly want to see images of violence, but then the mere presence of a firearm is not equivalent to violence, is it? I can rip a page out of this book about mutual funds I've got right here, and use it to slit someone's throat. But I'm not going to. I mean, a picture of a woman holding a gun could be emblematic of something as wholesome as a mother protecting her child. Yet all these otherwise rational MeFites are insisting that it's ugly and violent and awful. Are these same folks as alarmed by pictures of men with guns?

Seriously. I wish people would lighten up.

Uh. Yeah.

How many times can I post today before ya'll get irritated with me?

I had lunch in an Albanian restaurant in The Bronx on Monday.

On the wall was a print of a painting of a woman in full military fatigues with high-powered automatic weapon. It was rendered such that you knew that it was supposed to be an attractive woman displayed attractively.

It was a very odd picture.

That does sound rather strange. But I have to think of it as progress.

When I think of women and guns, I think of that scene in "Jackie Brown" where they are watching that video of women in bikinis and guns...

HAH! that's exactly what i first thought of, having only recently seen "jackie brown" for the first time.

In a case like that, I'm inclined to think that it's rubbing the noses of fundamentalist Islamists in the fact that "our" women are both dangerous and sexually liberated. I just can't find too much fault with that. I mean, it's kind of cheap, and I am absolutely not a fan of jingoism on garish display. But I have to admit that when I think about the misogyny of the men who were responsible for 9/11, I have a mean-spirited desire to make them look at pictures of hot women with guns.

I'm sure that's utterly misguided. I just can't seem to help it.

I remember that mural (I live in LA too). It bothered me because first they had a portrait of a firefighter, and then they took it down and put up the military picture. I thought that reminding us all of bravery and loss was a very important thing at the time, and then the military picture seemed all pro-war. So it pissed me off... I think it was a woman so they could get props for being feminist or something, since people in LA were so largely anti-war.

Reality is that women use guns and are in militaries all over the world. Generally speaking, mainstream society doesn't want that in their faces, they don't want to deal with a real-life GI Jane. Whether it's because it is too intimidating to them or anti-maternal (to coin a phrase). And then there's the violence...

The first Tomb Raider movie was released shortly after 9/11. Slash's best friend had a job in LA at the time creating the posters for the movie. The original version of the poster showed Lara holding both guns, just as she normally does, but 'out of consideration of people's feelings towards violence at the time', they made them change it so that she was only holding one gun.

Female or not, I think they would have changed it -- catering, once again, to the whimpy mainstream. (Or, in some cases, is it Hollywood's assumption that the mainstream is whimpy?)

Re: $.02
Err? One gun OK, two guns not OK? Thaaaaaaat's logical.

I don't know. I'm kind of in the middle on the subject of guns, gun control, gun ownership, etc. I believe there sinply has to be a rational middle ground. I mean, E owns a number of guns, and I like shooting guns. But, Jebus, I'm the least likely person in the world to actually point one at a living creature.

So I'm not sure what's wimpy and what's just conditioned ignorance. But I'll tell you one thing... Angelina as Lara Croft? Dear lord, GUH!

Re: $.02
Logic and Hollywood are just not normally found in the same sentence, but thank you for making it possible ;)

Yeah, I'm right there with you on the middle ground. At the very least, I do think there should be something like required gun education, like there is for driving. However, there are a lot of sides to that discussion.

I agree, Angelina as Lara Croft -- she so looks and works that part. On that note, I think I'll be back at the gym tonight...one Halloween I'd just love to try that costume...

OK, attention everyone! If the most committed pacifist I know likes pictures like this, then we are OK. Seriously.

Everybody knows I'm not violent. I'm a vegetarian, for cryin' out loud. I wouldn't aim a gun at a snail. But women with guns are hot. Empirically. End of discussion :)

i'm not actually sure i'm a pacifist. (i'm not sure i'm not, eiether). i just defend them rhetorically 'cause i get annoyed when they're misrepresented. :)

but yes, women with guns are hot. swords are even better . . .

**How many times can I post today before ya'll get irritated with me?**

I never get irritated with how much someone posts. Altho, sometimes it irritates me when someone I have known for 20 years and have tons of friends in common with and I am always saying sweet things to forgets to add me back as a friend on lj. wink,wink...nudge, nudge LOL

I guess being a sci fi and fantasy freak, I have seen so many images of women with guns that I don't even think anything of it. I mean, I prefer strong women who kick ass. Linda Hamilton was hot as Catherine in Beauty and The Beast, but in Terminater 2, with the kicking ass and shooting guns...Yea, that is WAY hotter.

Ack! Sorry. I didn't realize I hadn't added you. Just thought you weren't posting much. It is done.

Re: Linda Hamilton: Oh, gods, yes! Watching her in T2 just makes my legs go all wobbly!

Hugs to you.
