Today, I read an SG1 fic set in the near future, which makes a subtle reference to "President Obama." I love science fiction fans. I mean, there's the rare Orson Scott Card of the genre, but as a whole, SF usually visions a world in which I'd be happier to live.

In not entirely unrelated news, I just got back from my "it's-warmer-than-35-degrees-so-I-have-no-excuse-not-to" walk. Crossing Pennsylvania Avenue, I came upon a big dinosaur-guzzler with a bumper sticker showing a very distorted US map that appeared almost entirely red, and the words (in red) "Bush Country". More charming still was the sticker proclaiming the owner a "licensed terrorist hunter" and his intention to shoot people of apparent Arabic descent on sight.

Coming around the front of the truck, what did I see under the windshield wiper? A big old D.C. parking ticket! Oh, it was all I could do not to leave a little note beside it saying "Welcome to Bluesville, sucka! But, d. being the better part of v., I left well enough alone.

You know, googling an old high school friend today, I found that he'd recently had a lot of wise things to say about treating bigots with the humanity with which they should treat us. That's like him, if I recall correctly. For example, he's strongly in favor of legalizing gay marriage, and can articulate the reasons for it beautifully. But he also makes a (damned if I'm lyin') pretty good case for why we should be patient with people who don't get it.

Gods, it's so hard to be level-headed and compassionate. It's so much easier just to get angry. It's so satisfying. And so ultimately useless.

Kind of an impotent feeling, being in the intellectual minority, innit? Well, to borrow a line from Victor, "When I'm elected Empress--some things are gonna change around here..."

For instance:

Stupidity will become a felony.

Anybody who buys an SUV will have to pass tests in common sense and ettiquite before they will be allowed to drive them on public roads.

Parents of children who behave badly in public will be fined. Heavily.

That's just a few things off the top of my head.

Er... I shudder at the thought of Victor being elected empress of anything, frankly :)

Oh, I don't know anything about Victor's Imperial Election campaign, the above is from my own campaign platform.
