Nobody panic.

Two posts in two days, yet there is no major crisis. Well, there is, but it's mostly overseas. Apropos of that, the following is glommed from a friend's LJ:

"I believe that the president's leadership in the actions taken in Iraq demonstrate an incompetence in terms of knowledge, judgment and experience in making the decisions that would have been necessary to truly accomplish the mission without the deaths to our troops and the cost to our taxpayers."
--House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

One of the Emperor's particularly nasty minions, the House Majority leader [Tom DeLay], responded:

"Nancy Pelosi should apologize for her irresponsible, dangerous rhetoric. She apparently is so caught up in partisan hatred for President Bush that her words are putting American lives at risk."

(Source: CNN)

That's right, folks, it's now official: criticize our so-called President and you are endangering American lives.

But a better president than Dubya said this:

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

I suggest the following meme: Everyone who is so inclined, write down that Roosevelt quote on a postcard and send it to the dear House Majority Leader at either of the following addresses:

The Hon. Tom DeLay
242 Cannon HOB
Washington, DC 20515

The Hon. Tom DeLay
Office of the House Majority Leader
H-107 The Capitol
Washington, DC 20515

Then post this info in your journal and see if we can generate a big, fat reminder that dissent and criticism are not treason.

We ought to consider spending an hour or two this week doing this exact thing.

(Is this something that could be posted to postcard X or nervousness?)
(If I was rich, I'd have assloads of bumper stickers and tshirts made and hand them out downtown)

I'll try to think of a good way to get it out to site such as that, without ruffling too many feathers. It's been correctly pointed out that those sites are primarily art sites, and I don't want to use them as a personal soap box. OTOH, there are some related forums and things that might be appropriate places. Wonder if I could somehow get it on MeFi, inside a thread or something.

Good suggestions, though. (Jebus, am I manic today!)

Good point re art, and good point re figuring out a non-feather ruffly way to do it. There's a way, and we'll figure it out.

Manic: It's going to be okay, it's going to be okay, it's going to be okay. *sending calm*

Love you!

"...her words are putting American lives at risk."

Er, how's that again?

And, yeah, um, can we elect Teddy Roosevelt president? Even 80 years dead he'd have to do a better job...

I'm trying to take comfort in the fact that these public statements they're making become more and more specious all the time. Eventually, won't even the simplest of Americans be able to see how absurd they are? Maybe?

GO take a look at nikkinewsnet. These attacks aren't just being done on Nancy Pelosi; they're being done on Republicans, too. (That's actually something that frustrates me about this meme - it ignores people like John McCain who are getting harassed equally hostilely.)

I'll do that tonight.

Hey, do you mind if I copy this and email it to some people? That's just crazy...

Hey, girl! Of course you can! Please spread the word. Big hugs from Eric and me.
