The latest on voting machines

So, everyone should check out this MetaFilter thread, and also follow the links within it.

As I mention in the thread, what legitimate objection could legislators have? Voter privacy, perhaps? Given that paper records could be locked away tightly, just like they always were in the past, I don't think that qualifies as a legitimate concern.

And, although I haven't seen that any Republicans are outright opposing the bills yet, almost all of them (with a few noteworthy exceptions) are saying "undecided" or dodging calls. Are they waiting for the official cover story to be handed down?

For the love of all that's good in the world, please vote this year, people. And please be vigilant about this issue. Whatever your party affiliation, we cannot afford not to demand transparency in matters like this.

Edited to add: This might be a good time to take a moment to actually write to your congresscritters.
