not much between despair and ecstasy

I won't mince words. This winter has been one of the worst for me in recent memory. It has sucked. But with February on the waning side, I'm starting to be cautiously optimistic. I'm trying to do every little thing I can think of to keep my spirits up.

One of the lovely things my darling E has done for me is to create some mixes I can listen to on my commute, which have been such a boon when the car is cold, and the sun isn't up yet. This morning, I popped in the Ridicu-Mix. I went from Rock me Amadeus to Cop Killer to One Night in Bangkok. Did you know that's Anthony Stewart Head's brother on that one? Talented family there. Oh, and of course, It's Raining Men! I dare you to listen to It's Raining Men without feeling just a little bit cheered.

You should really consider digging up all your eye-rollingest guilty pleasures and putting together your own Ridicu-Mix. It really helps!

PS - Fred and I are going to do up some seed packets very shortly (probably this weekend.) Expect to be the recipient of seeds soon. :-)

Love you, honey.

Aww, man! I hope you'll take it in the spirit I intend when I say that I bet you'll make a hell of a Ridicu-Mix! I just think you have the ear for it. It's a fine art. Yay!

Heh... I recall doing something similar once before, except I called it the 'cheese' mix... fully of cheesey music goodness :)

there is something uniquely cheering about cheesy music, don't you think?

I'm sorry for the winter sucking (I'm a winterphile, but I know that it gets many people down).

I agree with "It's Raining Men" entirely. I've always thought so and never felt the least bit guilty about it! Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is similar, but for a truly guilt-free high, I recommend Stevie Winwood's "Higher Love", especially the long version with the extended bridge. The 80s are unfairly derided - it was a very energetic, tuneful decade.

Re: Murray Head, he originated the role of Judas on the first recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. If you've never heard his version of "I Don't Know How to Love Him", give it a shot. Technically, there have been better performances, but emotionally, it's spectacular. (I've always thought of him as the "talented" one!)

Yeah, winter just wrecks me. I have been known to get right down on my knees and kiss the first crocus I see, in front of god and everyone.

I, too, love Wham, and I agree that the 80s are unfairly overlooked for their influence on music. I'll look for MH's "I Don't Know How to Love Him." Even though it'll make me cry.

How could anyone not love that icon? It is one of the most evocative/provocative images I've ever seen. There was such tenderness and electricity together in them. How I miss it!

Tom Jones is kind of a one-man ridicu-mix. And always elicits a grin from me, too.

that's not unusual.
