Now we need to make millions of copies of this and drop them from helicopters all over the country (of course, that's kind of what this form of communication does, isn't it? some of us are a tad behind with the technology...

A second thought: there is an additional problem here, though -- in an excellent commentary in the current "Sojourners" magazine, entitled "American Mythology," which talks about the kinds of mythology that can take hold (especially if they're promoted); i.e., "we're the greatest country in the world," "we're in Iraq because we love peace and democracy," etc., etc. In such a context, the article says, "...just pointing out the truth -- showing people that they are being deceived -- will have only a marginal effect in the short run. Historically, at least, the truth has been no obstacle to the myth-making mechanism."

Very unsettling, and probably true. We have our work cut out for us.

Much love,
Mom

I suppose, when historians go about the business of putting down what happened in a given period, they're going to read the literature of the time and listen to the speeches. If most of that material reflects the preferred versions of events of the ruling party, that's what the historians will put down. Doesn't matter if there are a handful of Michael Moores out there dissenting. A sobering thought, yes.

But I'm hoping the the more we exploit the newer technologies (especially the Internet, with its unprecedented ease of self-publication) we can start to level the playing field. Now, about that LJ account I want to set up for you... ;)
