It's been posted around quite a bit, but in the unlikely event that you missed it, here's Joss Whedon's speech to Equality Now.

Been a while since I've posted about how much I love this man. I need a Joss icon.

That one actually made me tear up a bit. It's not very often you hear somebody (much less a man) expressing the idea that inequality between the sexes is detrimental to the entire human race, not just women.

Isn't it amazing that such an obvious truth should be demonstrated so rarely (by high profile males, at least) that when it happens it evokes an award? I think Mr. Whedon feels the same way.

I like the part where he says he shouldn't be getting an award for this. Of course, I don't entirely agree, but I completely understand the sentiment.

JOos talks about how he grew up watching these horror movies where the girls are always getting victimized, so that's why he wrote about a girl who victimizes the monsters right back. I am so, so glad that young women are getting to grow up with that image in their minds.

"Because you are still asking me that question." Yeah, I'm a bit misty, too.

Odd, isn't it? Frankly, I express that idea all the time. Or, at least I did, when I was naive enough to take on these kinds of topics in online forums. When you tell a chatroom full of people that at least 50% of your feminism is the result of your concern for men, and how their emotions are discounted, and how their lives are considered irrelevant, because they're essentially canon-fodder, you are met with an eerie silence. Nobody knows how to respond when I sat that. Perhaps they are frustrated that I won't just let them run their tired old schtick about divisivness, and how feminism creates upheaval between the sexes.
